Words Our Inner Child Needs to Hear

My little sister was a nanny for 2 precious little girls who are turning 4 years old. She decided to write them a letter and shared it with me. I am sharing it on my blog (with her permission) because it touched me so deeply. My little sis is wise beyond her years. It is written in such a way that I “feel” the love in her words to these little girls and when they get older, I know they will “feel” it too.

“How do you spell ‘love’?” – Piglet
“You don’t spell it…you feel it.” – Pooh

For me, it is a reminder to speak to my inner child on days that I just don’t feel that I am enough. It is advise I wish I was given when I was a child and advise that is still relevant for me as an adult. I know so many people who did not receive the love and encouragement they “needed” as a child and have struggled with loving themselves into their adulthood.

If you are struggling, please take a minute to sit down in a quite place and talk to that inner child. Put your name in the place of theirs and read this letter to yourself. Or, pass it on to someone you know who is struggling. Remind yourself that you have value, you are unique, and you deserve to be happy and peaceful.

Dear AJ & PR,

You girls are turning 4! I can’t even believe how fast time has gone by. Your beautiful blue eyes, gorgeous shining smiles, and sassy personalities constantly light up my life. I’ve known you both since you were just two years old, and yet it feels like I’ve known you a lifetime.

I’ve watched you grow from sweet little toddlers, to adorable little girls, full of life and love. I’ve watched you learn your ABC’s, numbers, and colors. I’ve witnessed the excitement when you learned how to use the big girl potty all on your own. I’ve seen you dance to your favorite music, dress like princesses, and color outside the lines. I’ve witnessed your resilient strength as you fell while playing and then picked yourselves up and continued like it never happened. I’m privileged to have received your early morning or movie time cuddles and your “we missed you” or just because hugs and kisses.

Right now your whole world consists of what dresses to wear, movies to watch, or snacks to eat. Whether you want to cuddle with Mommy or Momma or even both, because you can never pick just one. How many silly pictures you want to take, stories you want to tell, and pictures you want to color.

I can’t wait to continue to watch you grow into two beautiful human beings, so bright and strong. Full of life, adventure, and love. To witness your milestones and new experiences.

I would love to give you some words of wisdom, and hopefully years from now, when you need it most, I’ll still be around to look into those beautiful blue eyes of yours and tell you these words in person, but just in case, here they are.

Beautiful girls – never let “beautiful” be all you strive to be in life, you might not believe me now, but trust me, there are so many more important things to be focused on. You are capable of so much in this world. You have so much to learn and so much to give. Be strong. Dream big. Follow your heart. You can do anything you put your minds to.

Nothing is forever – I know that might sound a bit daunting, but really it’s a beautiful thing. The world around us is constantly changing, so change with it. Allow yourself to grow, change, dream, believe, and learn. With that, allow yourself to be sad when you need to, a good cry always does the soul good.

Don’t take things in life for granted – watching a sunset, climbing a mountain, or going on a drive will never fail to remind you that you live in a world so much bigger than you, let that inspire you.

Never settle – never settle in a friendship, in a relationship, in a job, in life. Never do things to seek the happiness of others. The happiness that will fill your hearts when you are chasing after your own dreams for yourself will be so much better, trust me on that one. Life will never go how you have it planned so take a deep breath and always be ready for a curveball, some of the most beautiful things in life are the ones that happen unexpectedly. Be spontaneous, go on that road trip, book that plane ticket, accept that job, and travel. You will only regret the chances you didn’t take. Make memories and cherish them. They are the most precious gifts that last a lifetime.

Lastly – never ever for a second feel like you have failed. Nothing you could ever do in this life could make you a failure. Life is all about leaning. There is always something new to know. Let that guide you to being the best you can be. Never question if you are loved, because I have seen it with my own eyes that you are loved more than all the sand in the sea and all the stars in the sky.

Thank you for coming into my life 2 years ago. For letting me love you girls, for inspiring me, challenging me, and for loving me in return. You are my sunshine.

With every ounce of my love,

M

  1. I love this so much!!! For my second child (the one who just graduated HS) I consciously chose not to keep a baby book, but rather to write her letters at milestones or when I thought of something I wanted to share with her. Having experienced breast cancer- I wasn’t sure how long she would have me. Now flash forward to her being 18, I’ve given her 2 of those letters. One on her 18th birthday and one on her graduation day. They indeed had the impact I had hoped. She drinks them in word by word. Just as these Little’s will when they get older and read these words. ❤️

    1. I think it is a very special way to speak into your child’s life! There is so much more we can detail in a letter and so much more powerful than if we just spoke them. What a special gift you have given your daughter! Thank you for sharing!
