Week 1 – My Codependency Recovery Milestones

To, hopefully, get back in the swing of things, I’m kicking off 2025 with a blogging challenge. I’d love you to join me!

January 2025: Reflecting on the Journey – My Codependency Recovery Milestones

In July I will celebrate 20 years of this remarkable healing journey from codependency. Will I ever be completely free of it, of course not, but I now know how to manage it and I live a life free of the chaos and pain that codependency brings.

Some of the greatest milestones I have achieved are:

  • the ability to say no and mean it.
  • the ability to set boundaries and follow through with consequences when those boundaries are crossed.
  • the ability to put myself first and meet my own needs.
  • stronger & healthier relationships with my family.

One of the key moments in this journey happened in 2007 after my ex was loaded out of his mind and slashed every single item of clothing I owned, including shoes. I called the sheriff and my ex entered another rehab program. I told him that if he did not finish the 6-month program, I would file for divorce. He lasted 45 days. This was one of the first and probably hardest times I followed through with the consequences I had set. Was it easy? Absolutely not. Did it change my life? Hell yes!

I learned my world would not fall apart if I let go of the unhealthy people/relationships I desperately clung to. It was the first step in the journey of taking back the power over my life that I never understood I had. I look back at the difficult and painful situations I’ve walked through over the years and when I practiced setting boundaries, following through with consequences and putting myself first, my life did not end as I feared it might.

Each milestone in my recovery has brought me to a place of peace and happiness that I would not exchange for anything. I look back and see them and I am so proud of myself and I don’t need anyone else to be proud of me, which is a milestone in itself.

I hope you join me on this blogging challenge. Visit the page and download the PDF. I would love to read your story!
