Part of the Healing Looks Like series on Journey On Strong

Healing doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. It isn’t always dramatic breakthroughs, big realizations, or perfectly put-together moments of strength. Often, healing shows up quietly in the small choices we make each day. These are the moments when we choose rest, set a boundary, tell the truth about how we feel, or give ourselves a little more grace than we did before.
This “Healing Looks Like…” series is an invitation to notice those moments. Each post will explore a different way healing can appear in our lives, sometimes gently, sometimes unexpectedly, but always in ways that help us move forward with a little more compassion for ourselves.
Healing Looks Like Slowing Down
There was a time in my life when I thought healing meant fixing everything as quickly as possible. My mind said, “If all is well, then I’m okay.”
If something hurt, I tried to move past it. If something broke my heart, I tried to push forward. If life became overwhelming, I told myself to just keep going.
If you had a problem, I wanted to fix it. If you needed something, I wanted to provide it. If you were upset, I wanted to make it better.
Slow down? That felt impossible.
Somewhere along the way, I started to realize that healing doesn’t always happen through action. Sometimes it happens through stillness. I purposely kept myself busy so I didn’t have to feel or deal with the emotional turmoil in my life.
Sometimes healing looks like slowing down.
It looks like taking a deep breath when everything feels chaotic. It looks like allowing yourself a quiet moment instead of pushing through exhaustion. It looks like giving yourself permission to pause without feeling like you’re falling behind.
For many of us, slowing down can feel uncomfortable at first. We’ve been taught to keep moving, keep producing, keep showing up for everyone else.
But healing often asks something different of us.
It asks us to be still.
It asks us to listen.
When we slow down, we start to hear the things we’ve been too busy to notice. We begin to recognize what our hearts have been trying to tell us. We notice the emotions we’ve been carrying and the places where we might need a little more compassion for ourselves.
Slowing down doesn’t mean giving up.
It doesn’t mean we’re weak.
It simply means we’re allowing ourselves the space to heal in a healthier way.
Sometimes slowing down looks like taking a walk instead of solving every problem today. Sometimes it looks like turning off the noise of the world and sitting quietly with your thoughts. Sometimes it looks like turning up the music so you can’t hear the thoughts. Sometimes it looks like saying, “Today I’m going to rest.”
And that is more than enough.
Healing isn’t a race. At times, we may want it to be (and oh how I wanted it to be), but it isn’t.
It unfolds slowly, in small moments of honesty and self-care. It grows through patience and grace for ourselves, and the willingness to move forward at a pace that honors where we are right now.
If you’re in a season where life feels heavy, maybe slowing down is exactly what your heart and mind need.
Not forever.
Just long enough to breathe again.
What does slowing down look like for you right now?
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Healing doesn’t happen all at once.
It unfolds in quiet moments, small choices, and the courage to keep showing up for yourself.
One step at a time.
